Browse the Internet or Magazines

The easiest way to begin to develop an idea of what you want your baby’s nursery to look like is to search the Internet and/or baby and expectant mother magazines. These resources are loaded with ideas on how to decorate your nursery for your baby boy or girl, or even if the sex of your baby will be a surprise.

There are many different themes to choose from, including cartoon characters, patterns, colors, and other popular characters that may be local to your region. Narrow down your choices and either print them or cut them out of the magazine so you can easily refer to it for ideas before settling on one choice.

Nursery Furniture

The furniture you choose for the nursery can be generic. It usually comes in white, oak, or cherry. No matter what color you pick, it will match with any décor, although lighter colors are more soothing to a baby.

Don’t go overboard in the furniture department. Depending on the space of your nursery, stick to the essentials, such as a crib, dresser, and night lamp. The shelves, nightstand, and changing table are just extras that you can decide upon if you have the room and/or your budget permits. If you are able to budget for a rocking chair, this is also a really helpful item for those early days of sleepless nights.

Color Scheme

No matter what theme you decide upon after your search on nursery ideas, ensure that you pick colors that are soothing to the eye. You want to create a soothing environment for both you and baby as you will be spending lots of time in the nursery.

If you know the sex of your baby, you can go with different themes, such as sports for boys or flowers for girls, but it is not necessary. You can also choose generic colors, such as pale yellows or greens with some simple patterns, such as stripes or circles that are not to “busy”. This is where your baby will sleep, so you want the colors to create a sense of relaxation and not activity.

Toys and Crib Décor

For an added touch, you can also purchase safe baby toys for your newborn to decorate the crib and nursery. Some great ideas are teddy bears that can be used for a boy or a girl, soft dolls for girls, and maybe some animal stuffed toys for baby boys. The most important thing is that the toys are safe and age appropriate.

The crib should definitely have soothing colors, designs, or patterns. You will want to get a crib sheet that is tightly fitted, a crib bumper, and a mobile that can be a little bit more colorful to intrigue your baby. A matching comforter is nice, but should not be used until your baby is older to prevent suffocation.
